Learning Helper

A Teaching System for People with Learning Difficulties

(US Patent No.: 6537073)

Overview

Learning Helper is a comprehensive computer teaching  system for

children (students) with learning difficulties such as autism. The main

features of

Learning Helper include:

1) discrete-trial methodology,

2) text/voice/picture/video based instructions and teaching materials,

3) database supported management system,

4) fully customisable lesson setup,

5) automatic progress monitoring and reporting, and

6) comprehensive reward system.

Learning Helper can be used both for school and home.

Teaching Materials

Besides the provided teaching materials, Learning Helper allows

teachers to add their own materials into the system as needed.

Teaching materials in Learning Helper are classified into subjects,

chapters, and contents, and they

are easy to manage and maintain.

Lesson Parameters

Customization of lessons in Learning Helper is achieved through

parameter setup. For example, all instructions, commands, and

responses in LearningHelper can be customized with different voices

from teachers, therapists, or parents.  There are more than ten

customisable parameters in the system.

Lesson Setup

There are six types of lessons, Object Identification, Concept, Multi-word

Command, Math, Spelling and Reading, in Learning Helper .  Lessons

are setup with teaching materials and lesson parameters.  With

comprehensive teaching materials and various lesson types, Individual

Education Program (IEP) can be setup in Learning Helper.

Lesson Playing

In Learning Helper , working on a lesson is called playing a lesson since

it is an interactive process. Except Reading lessons, which are stories

presented in slide-show style, all other lessons are taught through Lesson

playing by students. Learning Helper adopts the discrete-trial methodology

in lesson playing with four major steps 1) item presentation, 2) instruction,

3) response, and 4) consequence.  Lessons can be played one at a time,

or can be played in automatic mode, in which pre-setup lessons can be

played sequentially without teachers’ intervention.

Reward System

When the reward system is turned on, a student can earn credits on the

money board during a lesson playing.  A reward (a video movie) will be

awarded (a video  being played) when the pre-setup credit requirement

is satisfied. The reward system is programmable such that the parameters

in the reward system, credit requirement, the type of videos and the

sequence of videos to be played, can be setup by teachers.  When

Learning Helper is in automatic mode with thereward system turned on,

it is virtually, a playing/learning station.

Progress Report

Progress data are collected during lesson playing in Learning Helper.

Progress reports can be generated, and printed periodically per lesson,

per lesson type, per student, per class, and per school.
